Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease in which the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin it produces effectively. Insulin is a critically important hormone for the human body as it helps transport glucose from the blood into the cells for energy production. Lack or dysfunction of insulin leads to elevated blood glucose levels, which can cause various complications in the body. Today, it is estimated that approximately 415 million adults worldwide suffer from diabetes, and an additional 318 million have impaired glucose tolerance.
Types of Diabetes:
Type I Diabetes: Appears suddenly, usually in young individuals, and is considered an autoimmune disease.
Type II Diabetes: Typically occurs in older adults, often overweight or with metabolic syndrome.
Gestational Diabetes: Carbohydrate metabolism disorder diagnosed during the beginning or course of pregnancy.
Diagnosis:
Diabetes is diagnosed through blood tests measuring glucose levels, either randomly or when symptoms appear. Common symptoms for all types of diabetes include: excessive thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination, reduced stamina, fatigue, excessive hunger, sudden weight loss, and blurred vision. However, in early stages, diabetes may be asymptomatic.
