On the occasion of the European Day against Prostate Cancer, “YGEIA Florinas” invites men over 50 to a free laboratory test of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) from September 16 to 20, aiming to contribute to its early detection.
After the age of 50, men may develop benign prostatic hyperplasia, and approximately 1 in 7 men in older age is expected to develop prostate cancer. Early-stage prostate cancer often remains asymptomatic for a long time, and symptoms may appear only after the disease has progressed.
Symptoms to watch for include:
Urinary problems: difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, painful urination, frequent urination, and incomplete bladder emptying
Blood in urine (hematuria)
Erectile dysfunction or painful ejaculation
Loss of appetite and weight
Pain in the hip, back, or ribs if cancer has spread to bones
Weakness or numbness in limbs, loss of bladder or bowel control if cancer has spread to the spinal cord
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of cancer-related death, after lung cancer. However, early detection and systematic screening can lead to successful treatment in over 90% of newly diagnosed cases for localized disease before it spreads.
Recommendation: In addition to the free PSA blood test, a clinical examination by a specialized urologist is strongly advised.
