WHAT IS DIABETES MELLITUS?
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease in which the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or cannot use the produced insulin effectively. Insulin is a crucial hormone for the human body as it helps transport glucose from the blood into cells for energy production. A lack or dysfunction of insulin leads to increased blood glucose levels, which can cause various complications. Currently, approximately 415 million adults worldwide have diabetes, and an additional 318 million have impaired glucose tolerance.
Types of Diabetes:
Type I Diabetes: Appears suddenly in young individuals and is considered an autoimmune disease.
Type II Diabetes: Usually occurs in older adults, often overweight or with metabolic syndrome.
Gestational Diabetes: Carbohydrate intolerance diagnosed during or at the start of pregnancy.
Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus is based on laboratory blood tests measuring glucose levels, either randomly or when symptoms appear. Possible symptoms common to all types of diabetes include: excessive thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination, reduced stamina, fatigue, excessive hunger, sudden weight loss, and blurred vision. However, in early stages, it may be asymptomatic.
