ABOUT DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes Mellitus is a scourge of modern times, affecting approximately 1 in 10 adults, while almost half of them remain undiagnosed for a long time. When diagnosed, most patients are already in a complication phase.
Specifically, improper use or insufficient insulin utilization by the body leads to increased blood glucose levels, resulting in various complications such as those affecting the eyes, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, skin, feet, and so forth.
Diabetes Mellitus is distinguished into:
- Type I diabetes, which appears suddenly in young individuals and is considered an autoimmune disease.
- Type II diabetes, which occurs in older individuals, usually overweight or with metabolic syndrome.
- Gestational diabetes, in which carbohydrate disorder is diagnosed at the onset or during pregnancy.
The diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus is based on the results of blood tests for glucose levels, either in a random examination or upon the appearance of symptoms. Possible symptoms common to all types of diabetes include: polydipsia, dry mouth, polyuria, decreased tolerance, intense fatigue, polyphagia, sudden weight loss, and blurred vision. However, in early stages, as mentioned earlier, it may be asymptomatic.
