Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is caused by injuries, as well as aging of the body. The rates of men and women affected are the same up to age 50- 55, but after this age, it appears more frequently in women. Alteration of ligament characteristics causes severe pain and reduces their functionality.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease. In addition to the symptoms of osteoarthritis, it causes fever and malaise. 75% of patients are women.
Gout mainly affects older men and is caused by deposits of uric acid crystals in the joints. Characteristic is the pain in the big toe.
The following tests are recommended, some or all, depending on the condition:
Complete blood count, ESR, urea, creatinine, uric acid, transaminases (ALT/AST), calcium, total protein, albumin: performed to check the cardiovascular system, as well as kidney and liver function affected by arthritis.
C-reactive protein (CRP): estimates the level of inflammation caused by arthritis.
Rheumatoid factor (RF): used for the diagnosis and monitoring of rheumatoid arthritis.
Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP): used in combination with RF for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
Antinuclear antibodies (ANA): evaluated in rheumatoid arthritis for further assessment of autoimmune disease (can also be associated with other diseases).
